How to Move Hidden Photos from iPhone to a USB Drive

You can export hidden photos from an iPhone directly to a compatible USB drive, but first make the files available, choose Export Unmodified Original, and verify the drive before deleting anything.

Apple notes that Hidden album items are not transferred while that album is locked. Plan the unlock step carefully and restore your normal privacy settings immediately afterward.

What you need

• An iPhone with enough battery.
• A compatible USB drive, SSD, or memory card.
• A direct USB-C connection or the correct Lightning/USB adapter.
• External power for drives that need more power than the iPhone supplies.
• Enough free space for the selected originals.

Apple says supported drive formats include APFS, APFS (encrypted), HFS+, exFAT, FAT32, and FAT, with a single data partition. Compatibility varies, so test the drive with one ordinary file first.

Step 1: connect and verify the drive

1. Connect the drive or reader.
2. Open Files.
3. Tap Browse.
4. Confirm the drive appears under Locations.
5. Create or copy a harmless test file if appropriate.

If the drive disconnects or disappears, resolve power and format issues before handling private media.

Step 2: make full-resolution originals available

If Optimize iPhone Storage is enabled, the phone may hold a smaller local version while the full-resolution original remains in iCloud. Connect to a trusted network and allow Photos to download the selected originals.

Apple's archive guidance recommends choosing Download and Keep Originals before making a full copy from iCloud Photos. Confirm that the phone has enough local space.

Step 3: unlock Hidden for transfer

Open Photos → Collections → Hidden → View Album and authenticate.

If the export or transfer process still excludes Hidden items, Apple instructs users to go to Settings → Apps → Photos and temporarily turn off Use Face ID, Use Touch ID, or Use Passcode for the Hidden album.

This reduces privacy while disabled. Work in a private place, keep the phone with you, and turn authentication back on as soon as the export finishes.

Step 4: export unmodified originals

1. Select the photos and videos.
2. Tap Share.
3. Choose Export Unmodified Original.
4. Select the USB drive under Locations.
5. Choose a clearly named folder.
6. Tap Save.

Apple says edited photos export as their unmodified originals through this command. If you also need the edited appearance, export a separate rendered copy and label it clearly.

Step 5: verify before deleting

On another trusted device:

• count the exported items;
• open several photos;
• play the longest video from start to finish;
• compare file sizes;
• check the oldest and newest dates; and
• confirm the drive can be safely disconnected and reconnected.

Do not rely on thumbnails alone.

Step 6: encrypt the offline copy

A plain USB drive can be read by whoever finds it. CISA recommends encrypting removable media and keeping protected backups.

The best encryption method depends on which computers must read the drive. APFS encryption works well inside Apple environments; cross-platform tools and formats require additional planning. Whatever method you choose, test it and store the password separately from the drive.

Step 7: keep a second recovery copy

A USB export becomes another copy, not a complete backup strategy. Drives fail and are easy to lose. For irreplaceable photos, keep a second protected copy in a different physical location or a vetted encrypted service.

Only after both copies are verified should you consider deleting iPhone originals. Review what to do before deleting private photos and remember that iCloud Photos deletion synchronizes.
